Prof. Dr Fholisani Sydney Mufamadi, Professor of Mediation and Strategic Diplomacy, Director of the School of Leadership at the University of Johannesburg, born and raised in the colourful country of South Africa, has lived a life marked by perseverance, activism, and a deep dedication to good change.
He has been an unwavering supporter for social justice since his childhood, devoting his youth to the battle for equality and community improvement.
Prof. Dr Mufamadi is a globally-known figure in South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle, having served as an activist and leader in both the African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Communist Party (SACP).
He served in the late President Nelson Mandela’s administration, South Africa’s first post-apartheid government.
His services throughout this important moment in South African history helped shape the new democratic government.
Following his initial term, Prof. Dr Mufamadi served in ministerial roles for two more five-year periods, demonstrating his ongoing commitment to public service and governance.
As a staunch opponent of apartheid, he played a key role in mobilising grassroots groups and campaigning for democratic reforms during a period of heavy political repression.
Aside from his activism, Prof. Dr Mufamadi is a distinguished academician with a Ph.D. in Political Studies who teaches at numerous prestigious universities.
His research work focuses on governance, public policy, and conflict resolution, demonstrating his strong desire to promote social justice and equitable development in post-apartheid South Africa.
In this special feature, we go deep into Prof. Dr Mufamadi’s extraordinary story.
Prof. Dr Mufamadi revealed that he was diagnosed with glaucoma 15 years ago, which marked the start of his battle with the disease.
During this long period, he noticed a steady and persistent degeneration of both of his eyes.
This gradual degeneration resulted in the loss of vision in his right eye.
Later, his condition deteriorated, eventually culminating in complete loss of vision in his left eye, rendering him blind.
Despite this, he mentioned that he still has some vision in his left eye, albeit very restricted.
Reflecting on his appointments with optometrists in South Africa and the United States, he recalled being told that restoring his vision was impossible.
However, European Wellness was essential in helping him regain part of his vision.
He expressed gratitude for the remarkable improvement and stated that he intends to return for a second treatment at European Wellness’ Kota Kinabalu Centre, mentioning his prior constant contacts with Prof. Dr Yuriy Nalapko via phone calls.
Prof. Dr Mufamadi had also personally met and expressed his utmost gratitude to our dearest Prof. Dr Mike Chan for his professionalism and patience in giving the best treatment possible, during his first visit to European Wellness’s Kota Kinabalu Centre.
Quoting Prof. Dr Mike Chan, “As long as the eye has some living tissues, the retina, the optic nerves, and occipital lobe, can be regenerated – to recover vision loss.”
He further added, “Macular degeneration is part of aging as the eye start to age at 40. We have treated eye stroke, macular degeneration, retina pigmentosa, and glaucoma.”
